SUMMARY: As Grandma watches her soaps, she attempts to
call her daughters, the straightlaced working mother Carol and
the new-age-y massage therapist Leeann, but gets voicemail for
both of them. While leaving the message for Carol, she yelps at
a dramatic moment on her soap and drops the phone. She then sees
a commercial which intrigues her: a call from former Ms. Golden
Years USA Virginia Davenport for seniors to enter the Ms. Golden
Years America USA Pageant, starting locally with a competition
for Ms. Golden Years Yorba Linda. Virginia promises that winning
the prize will be a confidence booster. Suddenly, Carol bursts
in, worried from the voicemail she got that Grandma was hurt;
her energetic little daughter Kayla is in tow. Leeann also
arrives with her supportive roommate Lisa - really her
girlfriend, but Grandma doesn't know that. Family tensions come
to the fore as Grandma passive-aggressively chides her daughters
for not visiting or calling often enough, and the two daughters
fight with each other. When they discover that Grandma is
thinking of entering the pageant, Carol and Leann are
unenthusiastic, but Kayla is excited. Still, realizing that it
could be good for Grandma, who has rarely left the house since
their father died a year ago, the family ultimately rallies
around the idea of her entering the pageant, and Grandma decides
to go for it. |
